The site itself took a research committee several days and numbers of trips throughout the city to find the most effective and visible site. Originally eleven sites were discussed before the committee with the aid and support of the Mayor then narrowed down to a final three and eventually the final one when again the Mayor (a brother) assisted us by securing city property at well below the going rate.
As soon as the site was selected, the Council approached its members and local parishes for the support and financial assistance. Through the efforts of many the funding continued to grow. Projects estimates ranged from $2000.00 to near $3000.00, but support kept pace with expenses. This was a project based on faith. The construction took place concurrent with fundraising and both were completed at approximately the same time. Council members were totally responsible for site preparation, construction and landscaping.
The tombs features two sections of 4 foot circular brick walls filled with slag and a 14-foot copper clad cross making the tomb a beautiful 22-foot monument. Upon completion the Council held a dedication ceremony and plans to hold annual memorial services on site..
